East London Pathfinder Embedded ESOL

On February 26th Partners in Learning and the London East ESOL Pathfinder consortium jointly organised a workshop for community, voluntary and public sector providers in Tower Hamlets, Hackney and the City of London, which offer 'embedded' courses, or are interested in developing this type of provision.

The very high attendance at this workshop demonstrates the interest organisations have in enriching their work and attracting new learners by enabling learners to develop ESOL skills at the same time as developing their skills in different subject areas such as IT, Care or Art

Providers who attended the February workshop are incorporating ESOL into the following curriculum areas:
  • Arts
  • Childcare
  • Community empowerment and citizenship
  • Finance
  • Health
  • Horticulture
  • Information Technology
  • Life skills
  • Retail and Administration
  • Textiles

We have clustered this embedded ESOL provision into 4 main areas: Care subjects, IT, the arts & design and skills for everyday life. We are running a half day workshop focusing on each of these areas in June . Each half day workshop will include:

  • An opportunity to share good practice and information about embedded courses & discuss issues around delivering this type of provision
  • A tool kit: The process of planning and mapping a vocational course to the new national standards & ESOL curriculum
  • Information and advice session for teachers & trainers on teaching qualifications & professional development
  • Identifying further training, workshops & support

We have also started to draw up the map of the current embedded provision across the Partners in Learning area - Tower Hamlets, Hackney and the City of London. In addition, some participants are being interviewed further to establish training and support needs in more detail. The Professional Development Centre at Tower Hamlets College, Arbour Square has already been able to analyse the information received from the questionnaires completed by participants and are planning to address some of the training and support identifed. Organisations are particularly keen to have advice about assessment and accreditation, core ESOL curricula and how to access training for tutors .

We are now seeking further funding from the LSC to sustain the momentum of this developing aspect of the curriculum for adult learners.
