Low levels of literacy

The Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit were keen for the issue of learners with low levels of literacy to be addressed by the Pathfinders.

Liverpool Community College has produced an ESOL learning pack for use with beginners and Entry Level 1 learners with a family learning dimension.
Bilingual Families Materials Pack

The West Yorkshire Pathfinder have documented their experiences of piloting the Phonographix methodology (usually aimed at orally competent or native students, particularly children) with adult ESOL students. They have also suggested some ideas for teaching literacy to Entry Level 1 ESOL learners.

South Thames have provided a report detailing case studies of some of the ESOL students with low levels of literacy and descriptions of how they support these learners.
