End of Course Assessment Materials

Liverpool/Blackburn/Wirral ESOL Pathfinder Project

Project Summary

Good Practice Guidelines for Assessments and ILPs have been drawn up based upon the experiences across the three Pathfinder Colleges - Liverpool Community College, Wirral Metropolitan College and Blackburn College. They were disseminated at the Liverpool Pathfinder Conference on 5 December 03 where two workshops were delivered on this topic - Developing a Syllabus for Entry Level and Diagnostic Assessments and ILPs. Although the colleges worked separately on the development of their own assessment materials and ILPs in order to address the perceived specific needs of each student cohort, good practice was shared at a number of meetings and the guidelines were drawn up based upon these shared experiences.

The Assessments

The assessments are intended to be administered at the end of each course at Entry Level 1-3 to assess progress in each of the four skills ( listening, speaking, reading and writing) as mapped to the ESOL National Core Curriculum. They were designed primarily as internal accreditation to record the progress made by a learner in each skill and formed the basis of a statement of progress which determined if a learner was ready to move up to the next level. There are four assessments at each level containing the materials needed for the student to use in class. The tutor pack at each level contains all the assessments at that level with instructions, answers and marking guidelines. To make life easier for the tutor, the student pages have been reproduced in the tutor pack and annotated accordingly.
